Peter Alfred Schou
Peter Alfred Schou (born October 8, 1844 in Slagelse ; † November 21, 1914 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish painter and younger brother of the painter Ludwig Abelin Schou (1838–1867).
First years
Schou was the son of the merchant and painter Frederik Ludvig Schou (1800-1851) and his wife Arine Christine (née Werliin, 1810-1892). As a trained businessman, he worked in Hamburg from 1865 on . In the winter of 1973 he moved to Dresden for a few months to study at the art academy .
From 1876 he finally devoted himself to art. He went to Paris to study with the portrait painter and caricaturist Théobald Chartran and the history painter Léon Bonnat . In 1880 he was able to exhibit some of his pictures in Paris.
When he returned to his home country Denmark, he was immediately rejected : a painting he had submitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Art for an exhibition in Charlottenborg Palace fell victim to censorship and was rejected.
Hamburg
Schou left Denmark, took up residence in Hamburg again from 1881 to 1898 and joined a group around the Hamburg Artist Club. Parisian model he founded in an empty warehouse in the free port a Aktclub in which young artists could create free from academic constraints nude studies. The first members of the club included Arthur Siebelist , Julius von Ehren , Julius Wohlers and the decorative painter Otto Schmarje . Arthur Illies , Paul Kayser and Friedrich Schaper joined them later .
The director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle , Alfred Lichtwark , recommended Schou to the young painter Alfred Mohrbutter as a teacher in the art of etching . A lifelong friendship developed from the collaboration. Schou took part in the artist group's painting excursions to the Hamburg area, especially to Himmelpforten .
For his paintings he preferred simple motifs without great action, portraits with one or two people, and liked to use pale skin tones against earthy colors of brown and red. He also created landscapes and colorful still lifes with fruits and flowers. His pictures sold well in Hamburg.
Last years
In 1898 he returned to his native Denmark, where he enjoyed increasing recognition and took part in exhibitions. 1908 and 1912 awarded him the Royal Academy of Fine Arts , the Eckersberg Medal and 1911 issued by the Danish patron Carl Andreas Ancker Anckerske Legate for a study tour. Schou died in Copenhagen in 1914 and is buried in the park cemetery in Solbjerg in Frederiksberg Commune . His works can be seen in the National Museum Stockholm , the National Museum Oslo , the Statens Museum for Art in Copenhagen and the Fuglsang Art Museum on Guldborgsund on the island of Lolland .
