Louis Bastoul

Louis Bastoul (born August 19, 1753 in Montolieu , Département Aude , † January 15, 1801 in Munich , Electorate of Bavaria ) was a French general of the infantry .

Live and act

At the age of twenty, Bastoul entered the royal army on April 8, 1773 as a volunteer . He joined the infantry and remained loyal to this branch of service throughout his life. He was able to prove himself quickly and was soon promoted: Caporal (April 11, 1780) and Sergeant (January 25, 1787). At the beginning of the revolution he changed regiment on July 8, 1789 and was confirmed there as a sergeant in the same year.

In the following year Bastoul came to Béthune ( Département Pas-de-Calais ) as an adjudant-major to the Garde nationale, and from there he was ordered a little later with the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the Armée du Nord . On July 2, 1794, Bastoul changed as général de brigade to the Armée de Sambre-et-Meuse and came to the staff of General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan .

After further promotions, Bastoul was under the command of General Jean-Baptiste Kléber and fought a. a. near Wetzlar (June 15, 1796), Amberg (August 24, 1796) and Würzburg (September 1-3, 1797). After the Battle of Neuwied (April 18, 1797) Bastoul came to General Jean-Victor Moreau and took part under his command in the battles near Engen (May 3, 1800) and Meßkirch (June 4/5, 1800).

In the course of the year Bastoul switched to the staff of General Jean Pierre François Bonet and fought under his command in the Battle of Hohenlinden (December 3, 1800). There he was badly wounded in the leg and after minimal first aid he was brought to the Palais Rechberg in Munich ( Hackenviertel ) on the same day . In this city ​​palace he refused the amputation with the words “Vivre ou mourir, tout entier”. On January 15, 1801, he succumbed to his wounding.
