The Viaducto Martín Gil is a railway bridge in Spain , the route Zamora - A Coruña over the reservoir Embalse de Ricobayo leads with which the river Esla is dammed. The nearest town is Manzanal del Barco , Zamora Province , Castile and León .
The bridge, which was built between 1934 and 1942, was the largest concrete arch bridge in the world when measured by its span .
Surname
The bridge goes back to Francisco Martín Gil (1896–1933), who, unlike his predecessors, provided for an arch that was unusually large for the time at a significantly lower cost, but which he could no longer carry out because of his early death. The building authorities therefore gave the bridge the official name Viaducto Martín Gil . Eduardo Torroja Miret was entrusted with the further planning and construction supervision . The long construction period is due to interruptions due to the Spanish Civil War .
description
The 479 m long reinforced concrete bridge is designed for double-track operation, but is only operated as a single-track. Its large arch spanning the reservoir has a wingspan of 192.4 m and an arrow height of 60.1 m. It is framed by two mighty pillars with a center distance of 209.8 m. On the arch on both sides of its apex, at intervals of 12.5 m, there are five groups of four filigree supports, connected by crossbars, with which the road girder is elevated. The unadorned, right-angled connection of the supports to the girder forms a clear contrast to the bridge arch and the equally unadorned round arches over the steep bank slopes. On the eastern slope, five round arches with spans of 22 m and two short girder bridges, each 7.6 m long, connect to the high bank, on the western side there are three round arches and also two girder bridges.
The large arch consists of a three-cell reinforced concrete hollow box , which is 4.5 m high and 7.9 m wide at the top. Its upper and lower straps are 1.32 m thick on the fighters and taper to 0.90 m at the top. The webs are uniformly 0.70 m thick. The arch is only in the dry when the water level of the reservoir is very low. Since the reservoir was already filled at the start of construction, the arches were made in advance and with larger dimensions. The actual arch was only built after the side openings had been completed. First of all, a cable crane was used to create an arch from a steel frame corresponding to the Melan construction method , which served as a falsework for the formwork attached to it and was set in concrete. The Viaducto Martín Gil is thus also the largest bridge built using the Melan construction method.
The deck girder consists of a reinforced concrete slab supported by four beams, which protrudes slightly over the beams and thus reaches the width of the main arch.
The middle part of the bridge is straight, but curves to the south at both ends. It is therefore not suitable for high-speed traffic, for which a new line has been built about 8 km further northeast.
