The Muldenhütten viaduct is a railway bridge in the area of the municipality of Bobritzsch-Hilbersdorf and the city of Freiberg in Saxony . At Muldenhütten it crosses the Dresden – Werdau railway over the Freiberger Mulde valley and is a cultural monument .
geography
The bridge leads the double- track Dresden – Werdau railway line (route abbreviation DW, route number 6258) over the Freiberg Mulde . It is located immediately south of the Muldenhütten industrial area in a stretch of route running roughly from southwest to northeast at 36.49 kilometers (measured from Dresden), south of the Muldenhütten train station, and extends over the municipalities of Freiberg, Stadt, Freiberg district, Zug, Parcel 447/1 (Freiberger Mulde), 448, 449 (artificial moat), 450 and Bobritzsch-Hilbersdorf, Hilbersdorf district, parcel 450/3. The track is there at an altitude of 390 m above sea level.
history
The Tharandt – Freiberg section of the Dresden – Abzw Werdau Bogendreieck railway line was opened on August 11, 1862. The topographical conditions required a route with track radii that were relatively narrow for a main line and the crossing of several deeply cut river valleys, in particular from Colmnitzbach , Bobritzsch , Freiberger Mulde, Striegis , Flöha and Zschopau . This made it necessary to build several large bridges, including the viaduct over the Freiberg Mulde near Muldenhütten, which was built in 1860/1861. Construction began on May 7, 1860, and the arches were closed on September 16, 1861. Its construction cost 260,356 thalers. In 1932, the building crown was widened as part of repair work.
In connection with the expansion of the Niederbobritzsch – Freiberg section of the Saxony-Franconian Magistrale , the viaduct was comprehensively repaired in 1997, with a new reinforced concrete lane being installed.
architecture
It is an arched bridge made of natural stone masonry with a double-track carriageway on top. The bridge is about 196 m long, 43 m high and 8 m wide. It consists of eight basket arches vaulted towards the top. Of these, five large arches have a clear width of 25.39 m each and three outer small arches have a clear width of 9.06 m each. The vaults were built from sandstone ashlars worked after the stone carving. The cornice is profiled at the base of the arch (fighter). There are strong pilaster strips above it. The middle arch is framed by two pilaster strips. The parapet above the pilaster strips is massive, in between it consists of metal railings that have since been renewed.
meaning
In addition to its importance for traffic and its character as an engineering structure that shapes the landscape, the bridge is also a testimony to the history of the railway, namely the development of the route, and is of architectural significance, so that it is included in the list under object numbers 08991545 (Bobritzsch-Hilbersdorfer part) and 09304644 (Freiberg part) the cultural monuments in Saxony was included.
