Vib ribbon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vib-Ribbon is a music / rhythm game for the PlayStation that was released in Japan and Europe in late 1999 and early 2000, respectively. Similar to Space Channel 5 for the Dreamcast , you have to press the right key at certain times.

control

A simple animated rabbit (Vibri) is controlled on a line on which obstacles appear. There are a total of four different obstacles, each assigned to a controller button: wall, loop, hole and wave. In addition, there are six other obstacles that represent the compositions of the "basic obstacles". If you manage to pass a certain number of obstacles without errors, the game character receives angel wings and the obstacles that are then mastered give extra points in the final bill. However, if you make more than nine mistakes, the game character is downgraded in evolution and you first become a frog and finally a worm. However, if you master a certain number of obstacles without mistakes, you can rise again to a "vibri". There are three different levels to play through: bronze, silver and gold.

music

The soundtrack of Vib-Ribbon was composed by the Japanese group Laugh and Peace . A special feature of Vib-Ribbon is that you can insert any music CD into the PlayStation instead of the game CD and the game then generates a specific “obstacle course” based on the characteristics of the music, which you then play can. The graphics are intentionally kept very minimalistic and only consist of vector graphic lines. However, this gives the game a distinctive style that is partially continued in the successors, Mojib Ribbon and Vib Ripple .

reception

On November 29, 2012, the Museum of Modern Art announced the purchase of 14 computer games, including Vib-Ribbon , for a new permanent design exhibition in the Philip Johnson Galleries from March 2013. The announcement identified the titles as outstanding representatives in the field of interaction design. In addition to the visual quality and the aesthetic experience, criteria were therefore all aspects that contribute to the design of the interaction, such as the elegance of the program code or the design of the player behavior.
