Albert Victor "Vic" Aicken (born October 29, 1914 in Belfast , † 1972 ) was a Northern Irish football player .

Career

There are different statements about Aicken's early days in football, for example a newspaper article published in 1937 reported that he attracted attention in local amateur football in Belfast in the summer of 1934 and joined the Linfield Swifts, the Linfield FC reserve team . In a transfer list from October 1934, however, there is talk of a change from the amateur club Crusaders FC to the second team of Glentoran FC . From December 1934 Aicken appeared for the first team of Glentoran, for which he was called up both in the runner row and as a half-striker. In 1935 he won the Northern Irish Cup competition with the team by a 1-0 victory in the second replay against Larne FC . At the end of April 1937, Aicken completed a trial session at the English first division club Brentford before he moved there in early May for a transfer fee of £ 1,000.

Aicken did not succeed in the episode to oust regular center runner Joe James from his position and played until the beginning of 1939 exclusively in Brentford's reserve team, for which he showed some "great games". Among other things, he made a name for himself in mid-January 1939 in a 10-2 win against the Bristol City reserves , when he finished "with a fabulous individual performance in which he dropped five opponents and shot into the far corner" . His first division debut against Aston Villa , planned for January 25, 1939 , was canceled due to snowfall; three days later, he made his debut as a right wing runner instead in a 1-1 draw against Sunderland AFC . Commenting on the defensive performance, a correspondent said: “Against Sunderland, Brentford's defenders were as wonderful as London police officers could ever have been. All six, including the debutant Aicken, toiled like heroes for 90 minutes. ”On the occasion of a 5-0 victory over an army selection at the end of January 1939, Aicken was praised:“ With McKenzie- like ball touches, [he] fed his strikers ingeniously [with balls ]. "He subsequently played two more league games, but both against Grimsby Town (1: 2;" [...] while Aicken, after a promising start, immediately faded. ") And against Manchester United (0: 3 ; "Aicken was hardly an improvement over Muttitt ") it set defeats in which he was not convincing either.

Until the cessation of gaming operations in September 1939 due to the outbreak of the Second World War, he did not get any further missions. Aicken subsequently joined the Police War Reserve, like many of his teammates, and returned to Ireland in November 1939. In March 1940, the press reported that Aicken had joined the Royal Air Force . In the war-related substitute competitions Aicken was not only active for Brentford (16 games, 1939-1943), but also appeared as a guest player for Clapton Orient (25 games, 1941-1944), Chelsea FC (1 use, 1941/42), West Ham United (1 mission, 1942/43), Reading FC (4 missions, 1940-1943) and Watford FC (2 missions, 1942/43) in appearance and in 1941 also played a few games for Glentoran.

After the Second World War, Aicken, who was also described as an “elegant outrunner” when he was over 30, was active as a professional footballer in the South East of England in the Kent League , where he played for Ramsgate Athletic (1946/47), FC Dover (1947 / 48) and Betteshanger Colliery Welfare (1948/49).
