Vicente Marotta Rangel

Vicente Marotta Rangel (born March  14, 1924 in São Paulo ; † July 17, 2017 ) was a Brazilian professor of international and maritime law . From 1996 to 2015 he was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea .

After studying at the Universidade de São Paulo , the Sorbonne in Paris , the Hague Academy of International Law and Columbia University , he was full professor at the University of São Paulo from 1967 to 1994. He was also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration from 1979 to 2003 .

Rangel had been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea in Hamburg since October 1, 1996, and was re-elected for a nine-year term in both 1999 and 2008. He resigned from his position on May 18, 2015.

Rangel was the recipient of the silver medal of the Association Henri Capitant des Amis de la Culture Juridique Française and since 1999 holder of an honorary doctorate from the University of Coimbra .
