The table can be sorted within the columns, so that different representations such as an arrangement according to the beginning of the term of office or a presidency or a grouping according to the countries of origin is possible. The names of the twenty-one currently officiating judges are highlighted in bold.

Selection of judges

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea consists of twenty-one judges who are elected for a nine-year term. Of the judges who were elected in 1996 after the establishment of the court, seven were each elected for an initial term of three, six or nine years, in order to enable staggered re-election or re-election in the following period. This means that elections for one third of the judges take place every three years.

The judges are elected by secret ballot by the contracting parties to the Convention on the Law of the Sea . Each contracting state may nominate up to two people for the office of judges who have distinguished themselves in the field of maritime law and who enjoy a high reputation. Re-election is possible. No two judges working at the court at the same time may come from the same country. The selection of judges should adequately represent the different cultures and legal systems in the world. To ensure this, none of the geographical groups Africa , Asia , Eastern Europe , South America , the Caribbean and Western Europe and other countries with fewer than three judges may be represented. A judge can only be voted out by unanimous decision of the other judges.

The judges are not allowed to engage in any political or administrative activities in addition to their work at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. In addition, there must be no connections or financial interests with companies that are involved in the development or exploration of the resources of the sea or the seabed .
