Tullio Treves

Tullio Treves (born September 20, 1942 in San Miguel de Tucumán , Argentina ) is an Italian lawyer and was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg from 1996 to 2011 .

He received his doctorate from the University of Milan in 1964 and was professor at the University of Sassari from 1969 to 1973 , from 1974 to 1980 at the University of Turin and since 1980 at the University of Milan. From 1984 to 1992 he was also advisor to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations and advisor to Finland in the Passage through the Great Belt case negotiated by the International Court of Justice from 1991 to 1992. He also gave lectures on international law, including at the Hague Academy for international law as well as universities in South Korea, Mexico and the USA.

Among other things, Treves was a member of the 3rd UN Conference on the Law of the Sea from 1974 to 1982 and was significantly involved in the development of the French version of UNCLOS III .

After Treves resigned from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, he remained connected to the institution. On February 12, 2010, he was appointed as referee in proceedings between Bangladesh and India over the course of the sea ​​border in the Bay of Bengal . He resigned from this office on July 3, 2013 and was replaced by Jean-Pierre Cot . In another arbitration between Malta and São Tomé and Príncipe , Treves was also appointed as arbitrator by Malta on October 22, 2013. He also participated in the M / V "Virginia G" case between Panama and Guinea-Bissau as an ad hoc judge selected by Panama , which was heard before the International Tribunal for the Sea and ended with the verdict on April 14, 2014.
