Jean-Pierre Cot

Jean-Pierre Cot (born October 23, 1937 in Geneva ) is a French professor of international law and current judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea .

Life

After studying and obtaining a doctorate in law at the law faculty of the Sorbonne , Cot was a lecturer at the law and economics faculties from 1966 . In the same year he became a professor at the Université de Picardie in Amiens , where he taught until 1969. In 1969 he returned to the Sorbonne as a professor of public law and international law, where he taught until 1998. In numerous cases, Cot acted as advisor to various governments before the International Court of Justice . Most of these cases concerned border disputes and questions of territorial delimitation.

Cot was also active as a politician. From 1981 to 1982 he was French Development Aid Minister and from 1983 to 1984 a member of the UNESCO Board of Directors . He was then a member of the European Parliament , where he headed the social democratic group from 1989 to 1994 . From 1997 to 1999 he was Vice President of Parliament .

In addition, he has acted as ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague in six cases so far . He was nominated twice by Colombia and once each by Romania , Burkina Faso , Thailand and East Timor .

Since October 1, 2002, Cot has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg , where he will serve until 2020 after his re-election in June 2011. He had previously been selected by France as an ad hoc judge.
