Antonio Cachapuz de Medeiros

Antonio Paulo Cachepuz de Medeiros (born  August 15, 1952 in Uruguaiana , † September 15, 2016 ) was a Brazilian lawyer . In 2016 he was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea .

Life

Born in Uruguaiana, Medeiros received his university education at the Papal Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul . There he graduated in law in 1975 . In 1983, he also acquired at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul the Master Accounts in political science . In 1995 he received his PhD from the University of São Paulo . From 1998 he worked as a legal advisor in the Foreign Ministry in his home country. In this position he took part in numerous international conferences. de Medeiros received a reputation as a professor of international law at his alma mater . In addition to his professional activity, he was also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration . On January 15, 2016, he was elected judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg to succeed his resigned compatriot Vicente Marotta Rangel . Medeiros held this office until his death.
