Paul Bamela Engo

Paul Bamela Engo (* 5. October 1931 in southern Cameroon ; † 26. April 2010 in Yaounde ) was from Cameroon originating lawyer . From 1996 to 2008 he was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea . Before that he was active as a triple jumper and took part for Nigeria in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne , where he finished 17th.

After being admitted to the Inner Temple , Engo worked as an attorney for the British Crown in Lagos , Nigeria, and southern Cameroon. From 1961 to 1969 he was a member of the Federal Judicial Commission of Cameroon. He represented his country in 1963 in a legal dispute with Great Britain before the International Court of Justice . From 1964 to 1968 he worked in the foreign service in the embassies in Bonn and Washington, DC , before moving to the permanent mission of his country to the United Nations . In addition, from 1965 to 1990 he took part in the meetings of the General Assembly of the United Nations and the 3rd UN Conference on the Law of the Sea as permanent representative of Cameroon .
