Guðmundur Eiríksson

Guðmundur Eiríksson (born  October 26, 1947 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is an Icelandic lawyer and diplomat . He was a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations from 1987 to 1996 and then worked as a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea from 1996 to 2002 .

Life

Gudmundur Eiriksson was in 1947 in Winnipeg born and acquired in 1970 at Rutgers College first graduated as a civil engineer before law studies and in 1973 at the King's College of the University of London an LL.B. degree and a year later at the Columbia University a Master of Laws (LL.M.). He then worked from 1974 to 1976 as an official in the Department of maritime matters of the United Nations Secretariat in New York . He then worked from 1977 to 1996 as a legal advisor in the Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from 1988 to 1996 in the diplomatic service of his home country. During this time he was ambassador to Canada , Nicaragua , Colombia and Panama as well as to Costa Rica , Ecuador and Venezuela . In addition, Eirikson worked from 1987 to 1996 as a lecturer at the University of Iceland . Between 1994 and 1995 he was a visiting professor at the University of New Mexico .

From 1987 to 1996 Guðmundur Eiríksson was a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations , for which he served as rapporteur in 1990 and first vice-president in 1993. In addition, from 1978 to 1982 he was a member of the Icelandic delegation to the third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea, which led to the conclusion of the Convention on the Law of the Sea , and from 1984 to 1988 he was a member of the Preparatory Committee for the International Seabed Authority and the International Court of Justice for the Sea (ISGH). With the establishment of the ISGH in Hamburg , he was elected judge in October 1996. He was a member of the Court of Justice until 2002 and from October 1999 he was President of its Chamber for Disputes in the Fisheries Area .

After retiring as a judge, Eiriksson returned to the diplomatic service and was appointed Icelandic ambassador to Peru between 2003 and 2005 . He has held the position of ambassador for South Africa since 2008 and has also been ambassador to India since November 2009 .

Eirikson is married to the psychologist Thorey Vigdis Olafsdottir, with whom he has four children.
