Gao Zhiguo

Gao Zhiguo (born July 7, 1955 in Changzhi , Shanxi District ) is a Chinese lawyer and has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea since January 30, 2008 .

Life

Gao attended Jilin University in Changchun, where he graduated in 1980. In 1983 he received his Masters from the China University of Political Science and Law and in 1986 from the University of Washington . This was followed by a doctoral degree at Dalhousie University , Halifax .

Between 1980 and 1989, Gao was an administrative officer at various Chinese universities and authorities. After a brief stint as a lawyer in Truro , Canada , he gave lectures at the International Ocean Institute in Guangzhou and was a consultant to various oil companies. Since 2001 he has been a professor at the China University of Oceanography in Qingdao , the Chinese Academy of Sciences , Beijing and Xiamen University . Among other things, he is a member of the Chinese Association for the Law of the Sea and its vice-president.

On January 30, 2008, Gao followed his compatriot Xu Guangjian as judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea in Hamburg .
