Jin-Hyun Paik (born February 1, 1958 in Seoul ) is a South Korean lawyer and a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea since 2009 . He was elected President on October 2, 2017.

Life

After studying at Seoul National University , which he graduated in 1980, Paik received his master's degree from Columbia University in 1983 . In 1985 he studied at the Hague Academy of International Law before receiving his doctorate in international law from Cambridge University in 1989 . That same year he was admitted to the bar in New York State .

From 1990 to 1997 Paik was a professor at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a member of various delegations of the South Korean government , particularly in the field of maritime law . Since 1997 he has been Professor of International Law at Seoul National University. In 2003/2004 he was visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University .

Paik is among other things co-editor of the Korean Journal of International and Comparative Law . He has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg since March 6, 2009 and its President since October 2, 2017. His term of office runs until September 30, 2020.
