Shunji Yanai ( Japanese 柳井俊 二 , Yanai Shunji ; born January 15, 1937 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese lawyer and since 2005 a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea and was its president from October 2011 to September 2014.

Life

Yanai visited the University of Tokyo , where in 1961, he graduated in law acquired. He then entered the foreign service of his country and was department head in the Japanese Foreign Ministry , ambassador to South Korea and the United States . He was also a member of the United Nations Conference on the Law of Treaties in 1968/69 . From 1997 to 1999 he was Deputy Foreign Minister of Japan.

Yanai has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg since October 1, 2005 . From October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2014 he was its President. After his re-election, his term as judge runs until September 30, 2023. In addition to this activity, he works as a consultant for Mitsubishi Electric and other companies.
