P. Chandrasekhara Rao

P. Chandrasekhara Rao ( Patibandla Chandrasekhar Rao ; Telugu పి. చంద్రశేఖర రావు ; born April 22, 1936 in Veerulapadu , Andhra Pradesh ; † October 11, 2018 ) was an Indian lawyer . Between 1996 and 2017 he worked as a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and was its president from 1999 to 2002.

Life

P. Chandrasekhara Rao studied law at the University of Madras and then worked from 1963 to 1967 for the Indian Society for International Law in the field of research. He then moved to the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs , where he worked as legal advisor until 1976. In addition, from 1972 to 1976 he also served as legal advisor to the permanent mission of his home country to the United Nations (UN) in New York . From 1976 to 1996 he held various positions in the Indian Ministry of Justice. At the same time he was visiting professor at Osmania University in Hyderabad (1994/1995), at Kakatiya University in Warangal (1994/1995) and at the University of Madras (1995/1996). From 1994 to 2000 he was Vice President of the Indian Society for International Law.

In 1996 he was one of the first judges of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg . He held this office until 2017, from 1999 to 2002 also as President of the Court.

In 2012 Fr. Chandrasekhara Rao was awarded the Padma Bhushan State Order of India .
