Dolliver Nelson

L. Dolliver M. Nelson (born  June 27, 1932 in Sauteurs ; † July 18, 2016 ) was a lawyer from Grenada . From 1996 to 2014 he was a judge of the International Tribunal for the Sea and was President of the Tribunal from 2002 to 2005.

Life

Dolliver Nelson earned a BA from the University of the West Indies in 1954 and a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics (LSE) in 1964 , from which he also received his PhD five years later . In 1971 he was admitted to the barrister ( barrister qualification) in Great Britain at the Gray's Inn Bar Association , and a year later he was also admitted to the bar in his home country.

From 1970 to 1977, Dolliver Nelson was a lecturer at the LSE. From 1974, he worked as a civil servant for maritime law , from 1976 as a senior civil servant and from 1984 to 1994 Deputy Director in the Department of Oceanian Affairs and the Law of Legal Affairs in the Secretariat of the United Nations (UN). Between 1983 and 1994 he was director of the Preparatory Commission for the establishment of the International Seabed Authority , which began its work in 1994, and of the International Tribunal for the Sea , which was established two years later . In 1980 he was visiting professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada and from 1995 to 2003 at the LSE.

Between October 1, 1996 and September 30, 2014, Dolliver Nelson was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg . He was Vice President from 1999 to 2002 and President of the Court from 2002 to 2005. His successor in this office was the German lawyer Rüdiger Wolfrum in October 2005 .

Awards

In 1998 Nelson received the University of the West Indies' Fiftieth Anniversary Distinguished Graduate Award .
