Victor-Amédée Lebesgue

Victor-Amédée Lebesgue , also Le Besgue (born October 2, 1791 in Grandvilliers , Département Oise , † June 10, 1875 in Bordeaux ) was a French mathematician who worked in the field of number theory .

Life

Lebesgue attended a lyceum in Amiens and completed school in 1809 at the Collège de Beauvais in Paris. After a year of military service, he returned to civilian life and studied in Paris from 1810 to 1813. He then worked as a teacher at various schools and as a private teacher, including with a family in Russia. His first essays on number theory appeared in Moscow. In 1830 he returned to France. Through the mediation of a friend and on the recommendation of Siméon Denis Poisson , he received various positions as a lecturer at universities. After a brief further study at the Sorbonne in Paris, he lived in Neufchâteau in 1835/1836 , where he was extraordinarily productive scientifically. He corresponded a lot with Poisson, who was very impressed by the quality and scientific depth of Lebesgue's work.

In 1835 he got a position at the University of Grenoble , where he received his doctorate in 1837 with the thesis Thèses de Mécanique et d'Astronomie . In 1838 he moved to Bordeaux to the Faculté des Sciences there , where he received a chair for pure mathematics and where he worked until his retirement in 1858 and published numerous scientific papers. From 1858 to 1861 he lived in Paris, where he worked on the completion of books on number theory. With the completion of the book Exercices d'Analyse numérique. Extraits, Commentaires et Recherches relatifs à l'Analyse indéterminée et à la Théorie des Nombres (1862) was supported by his friend the number theorist Eugène Prouhet . His successor at the chair in Bordeaux, the mathematician Jules Hoüel , helped him with the publication of the table work Tables diverses pour la Décomposition des Nombres en leurs Facteurs premiers . Lebesgue spent the last years of his life mainly in the south of France.

On February 8, 1847, he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
