Life

Batyrev studied mathematics at Lomonosov University from 1978 to 1985 . From 1991 he was at the University of Essen , where he completed his habilitation in 1993. He has been a professor in Tübingen since 1996.

Among other things, he deals with mirror symmetry in algebraic geometry, which has applications in string theory and emerged from mathematical investigations into string theory, and related to the topology of Calabi-Yau varieties and with toric varieties .

In 1995 he received the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize . He has been a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 2003 . In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( Mirror Symmetry and Toric Geometry ). For his habilitation (Hodge Theory of Hypersurfaces in Toric Varieties and Recent Developments in Quantum Physics) he received the Gottschalk-Diederich-Baedeker Prize in 1994 .
