Victor Collins, Baron Stonham

Victor John Collins, Baron Stonham PC (born July 1, 1903 in Whitechapel , † December 22, 1971 in Enfield ) was a British Labor Party politician .

He was elected Member of Parliament for Taunton in Somerset in the British General Election in 1945 . He lost his seat in the British General Election in 1950 to the conservative Henry Hopkinson . Victor Collins was the only Labor MP for the Taunton constituency in the House of Commons .

Collins was re-elected to the House of Commons at the 1954 By-Election after running in Shoreditch and Finsbury after the death of Labor MP Ernest Thurtle .

He left the House of Commons in August 1958 when he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Stonham , of Earl Stonham in the County of Suffolk and moved into the House of Lords . In Harold Wilson 's Labor administration, he served 1964-1970 as Junior Minister in the Home Office from 1964 to 1967 and as Minister of State in the Home Office until 1969. As Minister of State in the Home Office, he was responsible for and completed Northern Ireland a three day visit on June 4, 1968.

He was appointed to the Privy Council in 1969 .
