Victor Rudolf Ott

Victor Rudolf Ott (born May 24, 1914 in Stuttgart ; † 1986 , Zurich ) was a German-Swiss rheumatologist , after whom the Ott symbol was named, among other things .

Life

After graduating from high school in Stuttgart in 1933 , he began studying philology and history in Tübingen . Since his father was a Zurich- based professor of Romance languages ​​and literatures at the Royal Technical University of Stuttgart, Ott also applied for Swiss citizenship . He studied in Basel and Zurich from 1934 to 1939. After graduating, he worked in various disciplines before he worked for several years at von Neergard at the University Institute for Physical Therapy in Zurich. There he completed his habilitation in 1947 with investigations into the Finnish sauna bath . In 1955 he was offered the chair for physical medicine and balneology at the University of Giessen , which he headed until his retirement in 1978. In 1980 he returned to Zurich with his wife Edith Ott, where he died in 1986.

He was President of the German Society for Rheumatology , the German Society for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation , the Swiss Society for Physical Medicine and Rheumatology , the International Society of Medical Hydrology , and a long-term full member of the Drugs Commission of the German Medical Association , leading commission member at the Institute for Medical and pharmaceutical exam questions in Mainz and Dean of the University of Gießen.

Ott worked in physical medicine , balneology and, in particular, rheumatology , where he conducted many interdisciplinary research.

He dealt with rheumatic diseases of the spine, especially ankylosing spondylitis and spondylosis hyperostotica , to which he gave these names and with which he worked intensively. In addition, he researched other rheumatological disease patterns such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis . He was also involved in nomenclature and classification issues.
