Victor Wembanyama (born January 4, 2004 ) is a French basketball player .

career

Wembanyama played soccer and did judo before he turned to basketball in the youth department of Entente Le Chesnay-Versailles and at the age of ten joined the youth team at JSF Nanterre . His father was a long jumper, his mother a basketball player, and his sister Eve won the 2017 European U16 basketball championship with France's selection. At the age of 14 he measured 2.08 meters and was described as an exceptional talent due to his height, mobility, versatility and good throw. He has received offers from the youth departments of ASVEL Villeurbanne and FC Barcelona . His parents refused this, as did the possibility of sending their son to the French youth training center INSEP , but Wembanyama stayed with JSF Nanterre.

For the 2019/20 season, Wembanyama was accepted into Nanterre's professional squad by coach Pascal Donnadieu, but continued to play in the youth field. At the end of October 2019 he made his debut in a European Cup match ( Eurocup ) at the age of 15 years, nine months and 25 days in Nanterre's professional team.

National team

At the U16 European Championship in 2019, he was elected to the team of the tournament after winning the silver medal with France and averaging 9.0 points, 9.6 rebounds and 5.3 blocks per use.
