Kawthaung (also Kawthoung ) ( Burmese : ကော့ သောင်း မြို့ ; BGN / PCGN : kaw thaung myo; Thai : เกาะ สอง ) is the southernmost mainland town in Myanmar . It is located in the Tanintharyi region . It was known as Victoria Point during British rule in Burma between 1824 and 1948 . This place is a free trade zone and is popular with tourists by small boats from the Thai city of Ranong . Tourists often use the border crossing, as in Mae Sai or Mae Sot , to extend their visa.
Kawthaung was among the cities in Myanmar hardest hit by the tsunami on December 26, 2004.
Kawthaung is on the northwest bank of the mouth of the Kyan River (Thai name: Maenam Kraburi ), while Ranong is on the opposite bank .
