Victorine von Gonzenbach

Victorine von Gonzenbach (born April 29, 1921 in Zurich ; † February 10, 2016 ) was a Swiss classical archaeologist .

Life

The daughter of the physician Wilhelm von Gonzenbach studied classical archeology with Waldemar Deonna and Paul Collart , prehistory with Eugène Pittard and classical philology , papyrology and Sanskrit at the University of Geneva from autumn 1940 . From 1942 she continued her studies at the University of Zurich with Arnold von Salis (Classical Archeology), Emil Vogt (Prehistory), Ernst Howald ( Greek ) and Ernst Meyer ( Ancient History ). Later she continued studying classical archeology with Karl Schefold at the University of Basel and again with Arnold von Salis in Zurich. In 1947 she received her doctorate in Zurich . After an assistant position in 1947 with Rudolf Laur-Belart in Basel, a study visit to Rome followed . In 1951 she was appointed ad interim director of the Vindonissa Museum . Until 1952 she was responsible for the collection, excavation and public relations work. 1957 habilitation they are at the University of Zurich. In 1959 she married the archaeologist Christoph W. Clairmont and went to the USA with him. From 1965 to 1967 she received an invitation as a visiting scholar to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Since Christoph W. Clairmont taught at Rutgers University , the couple stayed in the USA until 1985.

Most recently she lived in the St. Theodul retirement home in Fiesch .
