Vicuña Mackenna is a city in the Río Cuarto department , Cordoba Province , Argentina . In 1991 it had almost 7,200 inhabitants, the number rose to around 10,400 by 2010.

location

Vicuña Mackenna is geographically part of the pampas . The city is located in the south of the province, about 300 km from the provincial capital Córdoba , at the intersection of national roads 7 and 35 . The city got its name after a train station that opened in 1885 on the Buenos Aires - Mendoza railway line . In May 1911, the then governor of the province of Córdoba, Felix Tomás Garzón, decided to name the nearest town, which was previously called "Pueblo Torres", after the train station. The city was given its current name by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento in honor of his friend, the Chilean writer and historian Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna .

economy

The city is one of the most dynamic economies in the region, the main activity being agriculture . There are soybeans , peanuts and corn grown, other areas are dairy products and agritourism. In the city there are several industrial companies for the processing of agricultural products, including meat production.
