action

Since Celia Bank's husband tragically died three years ago, she has lived alone with her seven-year-old daughter Lilly. She no longer believes in a renewed love affair and thinks that she has found her calling in caring for her child. But Lilly would like her mother to be completely happy, which probably includes a new man in her mother's life. So she got the idea to write Santa Claus a few weeks before Christmas and ask that her mother fall in love again.

This letter falls into the hands of Jake Platt, an author of children's books who has taken a long break from writing and occasionally works for the “Christmas wish letter box”. Lilly's letter inspires him to write again after a long time. He replies as "Santa Claus" and tries to comfort the child. He has no idea what chain of events he is setting in motion, because when Lilly receives his detailed reply letter, she gives it to her mother to read. His sensitive words touch Celia so much that she replies to the letter. The result is that there is a lively exchange of letters between the two, in which feelings are not left out. Based on Jake's choice of words, Celia suspects that the man she loves to write to is a writer. However, they both keep their true identity to themselves.

After Celia suddenly stopped writing, Jake felt the need to get to know the woman who wrote him such beautiful letters. Although only one PO box is given as the sender on the letters, Jake can locate the city from which the letters came and has his manager organize a book reading there. Lilly also learns about it through posters in the bookstores and so Jake and the girl actually get to know each other. But Jake does not reveal himself because he saw Lilly's mother with a man. Resigned, he withdraws, but then goes back to mother and daughter, which is worthwhile as Celia, like her daughter, immediately feels great sympathy for the stranger with whom one can talk so wonderfully. Although more than just sympathy between the two can quickly be seen, Jake does not find the right moment to confess to Celia that he wrote Santa's letters.

Believing that there is another man in Celia's life, he withdraws and eventually leaves. However, Lilly makes the discovery that the letters from "Santa Claus" were written in Jake's handwriting. She is delighted to share this with her mother, who says that maybe Jake remembers the "wishing well" that she had written to him about and that they always went to for Christmas when Lilly's father was still alive. And in fact, Jake has also changed his mind and is the other way around. With horse and sledge he comes through the freshly fallen snow towards Celia and Lilly, who are standing at the wishing well and happily rushing towards him. After a warm hug, the three of them drive back to town like a small family.
