features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 18 to 26 millimeters. The forewings have a light brownish to gray-brown basic color. Several brown transverse lines almost parallel to the hem run on them. A narrow, dark band and a small black discal spot can often be seen in the midfield. A whitish smudge flows into the apex . A continuous line or a line made up of black lines runs directly on the hem. The hind wings are a little lighter colored and provided with several dark transverse lines.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The round egg is yellowish at first and later turns red.

Adult caterpillars are greenish or brownish in color and have an interrupted dark back line and blackish slashes.

The pupa is reddish brown in color and shows dark wing sheaths and spots on the back. It has a very pointed cremaster .

Similar species

The multi-line leaf tensioner is similar to the marsh weed leaf tensioner ( Orthonama vittata ), but the whitish smear at the apex is replaced by a black graduation line. In addition, the black line running along the hem is made up of small dots.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The species is distributed from North Africa across large parts of Europe to Russia . In the north it occurs on the British Isles and in southern Fennoscandinavia , in the south the range extends to the Pamir . The multi-line leaf tensioner prefers to colonize moist meadows, swamp forests and moorland areas.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly in up to four generations per year, with the first observed in late March and the last in early October. You visit artificial light sources and baits . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of different types of bedstraw ( Galium ). The species usually overwinters as a pupa. When a fourth generation is formed, their eggs overwinter.

Danger

The multi-line leaf tensioner occurs in different numbers in the German federal states, more numerous in the north, but has been lost in some southern areas. It is listed in category 3 (“endangered”) on the red list .
