Vienna Internet eXchange
The Vienna Internet eXchange , or VIX for short , is an Internet hub in Vienna . This is operated by the Central IT Service of the University of Vienna . A special feature of the VIX is its net neutrality .
history
With the aim of keeping local Internet traffic as local as possible, the Vienna Internet eXchange was founded in 1996 by the IT center of the University of Vienna. At that time, this already comprised bilateral peering agreements between the first Austrian Internet Service Providers (ISP) ACOnet , the former EUnet GmbH, IBM Global Network, VIAnet and Austria Presse Agentur (APA).
Since 33 ISPs shared five racks in 1999 , the node in the new institute building of the University of Vienna was increased to 21 racks and equipped with air conditioning and UPS .
In 2001, well-known providers such as Deutsche Telekom or Cable & Wireless from the USA were already connected to the VIX. Due to the rapid increase in traffic and increased space requirements, new hardware and a second location were required, which was found at Interxion , where the second data center is still located today.
In 2006 new switches were purchased which can convert data of up to 1.6 terabits per second.
Locations
The internet node is housed redundantly in three data centers in Vienna. The individual locations are:
