Viesīte (German Eckengrafen ) is a small town in south-eastern Latvia , which received city rights in 1928. In 2016 it had 1,705 inhabitants.
history
The place developed in the 19th century around the Eckengrafen manor, where the streets Jaunjelgava - Jēkabpils and Aknīste - Nereta cross. During the First World War , the German army built a narrow-gauge railway with Viesīte as a junction. This small train continued to be operated and a small steam locomotive is still on display in the town center.
