Viggo Brøndal
Rasmus Viggo Brøndal (born October 13, 1887 in Copenhagen , † December 14, 1942 in Copenhagen) was a Danish Romance scholar and philosopher of languages.
life and work
Brøndal studied in Copenhagen with the romanist Kristoffer Nyrop and the philosopher Harald Høffding , and from 1912 to 1913 in Paris with Antoine Meillet and Joseph Bédier . He did his doctorate on Substrater og Laan i Romansk og Germansk [Substrate and borrowing in Romance and Germanic], Copenhagen 1917 (French under the title Substrate et emprunt en roman et en Germanique. Etude sur l'histoire des sons et des mots , Copenhagen 1948) , a work into which he already incorporated knowledge from reading the just published course by Ferdinand de Saussure . From 1925 to 1928 he was a Danish lecturer at the Sorbonne, and from 1928 until his death he was professor of Romance philology in Copenhagen. In 1931, together with Louis Hjelmslev , he founded the Copenhagen Linguist Circle (based on the model of the Prague Linguist Circle ) and in 1939 the journal Acta Linguistica .
