Viggo Fausböll

Michael Viggo Fausböll (born September 22, 1821 in Lemvig , † June 3, 1908 in Charlottenlund, Gentofte Kommune ) was a Danish Pali researcher.

Fausböll was a student from 1838 to 1847 and graduated from a theological faculty. During this time he also studied Sanskrit and Pali.

From 1878 to 1902 he was Professor of Indian Philology at the University of Copenhagen . In 1879, on the occasion of the university's 400th anniversary, he was awarded an honorary doctorate there . From 1888 he was a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin . From 1890 he was a member of the Asiatic Society in London . In 1892 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . His version of the Dhammapada , published in 1855, was the basis for the first translation of this work into English. This work is part of the series Sacred Books of the East edited by Friedrich Max Müller .
