Lemvig is a town in western Denmark on the southern bank of the Limfjord . The place has 6895 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). Lemvig is the capital of the municipality of Lemvig and has belonged to the Midtjylland region since the municipal reform in 2007 .
Location and history
The city is located in northwest Jutland on the southern bank of the Limfjord. In order to protect the urban area from storm surges , a flood protection system was built at the end of 2012 . It is designed for a water level of 2.1 meters above normal level. The storm lows on January 10th and 11th, 2015, brought the first practical test.
The landscape around Lemvig is shaped by the last Ice Age , and the area was already settled in the Stone Age. Burial mounds from the Bronze Age can still be found , which are now under protection. The city itself emerged in the Middle Ages , its name is first mentioned in 1234. The church in the center also dates from the 13th century, it has an onion dome , which is atypical for Denmark, and richly carved rococo inventory inside .
The cartoonist Henning Gantriis was inspired by his place of birth in Lemvig to write the comic series “ Livets gang i Lidenlund ”, in which the provincial small-town environment was targeted . It appeared from 1953 to 1989 in the daily Politiken and was also printed in neighboring Scandinavian countries.
Planet path
A special attraction of Lemvig is the Planetsti sculpture trail . At the edge of the city center you can find a model of the sun , made of bronze on a scale of 1: 1,000,000,000, i.e. about 1.4 m in diameter, and with correct-scale models of all planets ; the dwarf planets Ceres and Pluto are represented by small bronze balls on granite bases. Pluto lies on the banks of the Limfjord. The Halley's Comet (Anno 1910) is provided with a box hedge shown.
