The NB488A with the announced name Viking Glory is a ferry under construction for the Finnish shipping company Viking Line . It is operated by the Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd. built in Xiamen , China. As a special feature, the ferry is equipped with a drive for LNG (liquefied gas) and prepared for two optional Flettner rotors in order to comply with the Sulfur Emission Control Area rules.
Like the slightly narrower Viking Grace (a Flettner rotor in test operation until 2019), it is designed for the daily liner service between Turku and Stockholm with a stopover on the Åland Islands . The ferry was planned for 2800 passengers, 200 staff and 500 cars . The regular ferry service has been announced for the beginning of 2021.
Construction of the ship
The contract to build the ferry was signed in November 2016. The ship is part of a subsidized Finnish-Swedish EU project to improve the efficiency of the Turku-Stockholm sea route. Construction of the ship with hull number XSI488A began on September 3, 2018 at the Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry shipyard in Xiamen, China. To find a name, the shipping company collected 22,500 suggestions, 10 of which were put to a vote, in which around 30,000 people then took part. At the end of May the name Viking Glory was officially announced. The keel of the first hull segment followed on June 3, 2019.
Ship data
The ferry has a total length of 218.55 m, a width of 35 m and thus reaches around 63,100 GT. She reaches a cruising speed of 22.1 knots. The hull has the ice class 1A-Super (up to 1 meter ice thickness).
Two areas on the top deck are each intended for a 24 meter high Flettner rotor with a diameter of 4 meters ( Norsepower Rotor Sail). After about 12 months of testing a Flettner rotor of the same type on the Viking Grace , which is already traveling the identical route of the Viking Glory , the shipping company assessed the real fuel savings as too low. That is why it was announced for the Viking Glory that all facilities for the Flettner rotors would be prepared, but that no rotors would be installed until further notice. A final decision has been announced for the period after the official end of test operations at the end of 2019.
Cabins and board equipment
The windows are particularly large in order to offer a largely unobstructed view of the Aland archipelago and the skerries off Stockholm and Turku. The architecture office Konzept Stockholm is responsible for the interior design .
route
The Viking Glory is the reduced -emissions replacement for the Amorella ferry, which entered service in 1988, on the Turku – Mariehamn / Långnäs – Stockholm route. Mariehamn stop is served during the day and Långnäs stop at night. Before the departure times, a shuttle bus drives from the port that is not approached to the port. The total travel time between Turku and Stockholm and back is between 9:35 hours and 12:05 hours.
