The Amorella is a ferry that is operated by Viking Line on the Turku - Mariehamn / Långnäs - Stockholm route. It was built in 1988 by Brodogradilište Split in Yugoslavia .
history
The Amorella was ordered in 1986 by SF Line , a partner of the Viking Line consortium. Although Brodogradilište Split outbid other shipyards, the Finnish state offered to subsidize the construction of the ship if it were built in a Finnish shipyard. This was common practice in the 1980s to bring more jobs to Finland, but this time SF Line turned it down and had the ship built in Yugoslavia. The originally planned delivery date for the Amorella was March 1988, but delays in construction meant that it was not completed before September, forcing SF Line to continue its lucrative summer business with the previous ships.
With the exception of brief periods in 1997, 1998 and 2002, the Amorella served the Turku-Mariehamn / Långnäs-Stockholm route continuously, making her the longest- serving ship on this route. Originally she only docked in Mariehamn for day trips, but from July 1999 she had to dock on the Åland Islands in both directions to allow duty-free sales on board, so a stop in Långnäs was added for the night trip.
Incidents
In 1993 the ship ran aground near Stockholm. It was able to free itself, but the hull was damaged. Water seeped in and diesel oil leaked from a damaged tank. The ship was able to continue its voyage to Stockholm. After all passengers had been disembarked and all cargo had been unloaded, the Amorella drove to the Luonnonmaan Telakka shipyard in Naantali for repairs .
In 1995 and again in 2001 there were outbreaks of fire in a cabin that could be extinguished with on-board resources. In May 2005 there was a fire in a vehicle parked on deck 5, which was also extinguished by the ship's crew. In March 2010 the ship had to be freed from icebreakers made of thick pack ice in which it was stuck together with other ships. It collided with the Finnfellow of Finnlines .
In December 2013, the Amorella ran aground on a rock. The ferry with 1945 passengers and crew on board was en route from Turku to Mariehamn in Åland .
future
As part of the Viking Line's rebuilding program, the Amorella's public spaces and cabins will be renewed over the coming years.
