Viktor Gernhard

Viktor Gernhard (born March 14, 1923 in Ebenhausen ; † February 20, 2014 in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm ) was a German marine painter and illustrator .

Life

Gernhard was trained as a typesetter and printer. During the Second World War he was a soldier in the Navy from 1940 to 1945 and drove on the destroyer Z 25 . After the war Gernhard studied at the Munich Art Academy , he was a student of Walter Repke . From 1933 he lived in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm.

Gernhard also created paintings with views of the Hallertau and its people, including a portrait of Joseph Maria Lutz that hangs in the stairwell of the Pfaffenhofen school named after the poet.

Gernhard is the most important German illustrator for submarine literature. He illustrated for all German marine publishers.
