Viktor Sidler

Viktor Sidler (born May 1, 1934 ; † January 8, 2013 in Zurich ) was a Swiss film scholar , filmmaker and publicist .

Life

Viktor Sidler was the only child of Alfred Sidler, a painter and teacher at the School of Applied Arts (1905-1993); his mother Rywka Szadjdwasser († 1970) came from Konstanynof near Lodz. From 1946 Sidler lived in Lucerne , where he attended grammar school before studying history, German literature and comparative literature at the University of Zurich . In 1973 he completed his studies with a dissertation on the interactions between theater and history. He then worked as a teacher at the Rämibühl high school for mathematics and natural sciences in Zurich. There he inspired countless young people to film and organized a cutting and projection room for them. He was also a mentor for the film club of the Zurich Cantonal Schools (FZK).

In 1957 Viktor Sidler founded the film production company Septima Ars together with Mario Gerteis , which by 1966 had made 15 medium-length films in 8 and 16 mm format.

From around 1960 Viktor Sidler was a member of the board of Cinélibre (Association of Swiss Film Clubs and Not-for-Profit Cinemas). From 1964 to 1973 he was editor of the Swiss film magazine Cinema , in which he also published regularly.

Between 1976 and 1998 Viktor Sidler gave around 20 lectures on film studies, first at the University of Zurich, from 1983 at the ETH Zurich , Department XII. At the ETH he worked closely with the film club Filmstelle VSETH .

In 1996 Viktor Sidler was awarded the Zurich Film Prize for his long-term commitment to film studies and film history .

Viktor Sidler died on January 8, 2013 after a dedicated life for the film. On January 14, he was laid to rest in the Manegg cemetery in Zurich.
