Viktoria Marinova

Viktorija Marinowa ( Bulgarian Виктория Маринова ; * 1988 in Russe , Bulgaria ; † before October 6, 2018 ibid.) Was a Bulgarian investigative journalist and television presenter.

Life

Viktoria Marinova was the head of the regional television channel TVN. She was found on October 6, 2018, apparently raped and murdered, on the banks of the Danube . Marinowa had previously reported abuse of EU subsidies in Romania . After Daphne Caruana Galizia and Ján Kuciak , she is the third person in the field of investigative journalism to be murdered in Europe within a year. The EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans tweeted : "Another courageous journalist has died fighting for truth and against corruption".

At noon on October 9, 2018, Bulgarian authorities informed the German police that a suspicious Bulgarian named Severin K. was probably staying with close relatives in Germany. A few hours later he was arrested in Stade . The suspect made a partial confession. He said he was drunk and used drugs at the time of the crime.

Viktorija Marinowa parted ways with Sliven Maximov in spring 2018. She leaves behind a seven-year-old daughter.

Funeral service and conviction of the murderer

On October 12, 2018 , a memorial service was held in the Sweta Troiza Cathedral in Rousse, Marinova's hometown. Hundreds of people took part, including relatives, colleagues and people who had not known Marinowa personally.

In April 2019, the perpetrator was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
