Vilhelm Bryde

Vilhelm Bryde (born April 28, 1888 in Stockholm , Sweden ; † April 26, 1974 ibid) was a Swedish film architect and film company manager with occasional trips to acting and film production.

Live and act

The merchant's son Bryde attended the technical college in his hometown and graduated in 1909 with an exam. He then trained as an actor at the drama school and worked as a scene and costume designer on Stockholm theaters. In 1911, Bryde made his debut as a professional actor. Between 1913 and 1919 he was a member of the Svenska Teatern.

In 1919, Vilhelm Bryde switched to film. Initially, he mainly designed the film structures for productions in which the then leading theater star Gösta Ekman played the main role. It was not until Axel Esbensen 's early death on New Year's Day 1923 that Bryde's career as a film architect began to gain momentum. In the remaining years of this decade, which was to be the heyday of Swedish cinema, Vilhelm Bryde designed the buildings for a wealth of artistically and in some cases also commercially highly successful productions.

He designed his most important film-technical buildings for productions by Gustaf Molander , Mauritz Stiller and Victor Sjöström . But he wasn't too good for pure entertainment either: for example, Bryde designed the decorations for some comedies with Pat and Patachon . With Glücksmelodie he was also responsible for scenography for the first full-length Swedish sound film in 1929. Soon after, in 1931, Bryde retired almost completely from the active film business. In 1933 he was appointed to the cinema management of Svensk Filmindustri .

In his temporary function (1926–1931) as head of production at the Stockholm company Film AB Minerva, Bryde produced some of his late works personally - often in collaboration with German and British partners - and also appeared sporadically in front of the camera.

Since 1915 he was married to the actress Lisa Holm (1888–1976). Both son Lars Bryde (1918–2002) worked as an architect.
