Vilhelms Toms Marija Lapelis OP (born December 30, 1961 in Daugavpils , Latvian SSR ) was bishop of the Liepāja diocese in Latvia from 2001 to 2012 .

Life

Lapelis, a member of the Dominican Order, was ordained a priest on July 1, 1986 and a bishop on March 25, 2001 . The latter was accomplished by the then Nuncio in the Baltic countries Archbishop Erwin Josef Ender in the presence of the two co-consecrators Bishop Ārvaldis Andrejs Brumanis and Cardinal Janis Pujats . He was one of the youngest bishops in the world when he was ordained.

On June 20, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. Vilhelms Lapelis' surprising request to resign. Lapelis justified his resignation with exhaustion and the desire to retire to a life as a monk.
