The Villa Freischütz was built in 1909/10 according to plans by the Stuttgart architect Christian Städler. The builder was the master butcher Ignaz Gritsch from Merano. In 1921 he sold the house to the wine merchant Franz Fromm.

The Fromm Hilliger Ugarte Navarini family

Franz Fromm (1854–1941) was born in Klein Lengden near Göttingen . In Barcelona , where he met his wealthy wife Luisa Hilliger (1865–1904), he worked as a wine merchant. After their death, he and his children, who were still alive, came to Merano every winter for health reasons and rented houses in line with their status. In 1918 their son Jorge (* 1887) died in Rametz Castle . The household then included the now grown-up children Luisabel (1888–1978), Zoila (1892–1982) and Francesco (Paco) (1895–1959) as well as "aunt" Isabel Ugarte. Isabel Ugarte was Luisa Hilliger's half-sister. In 1922 Villa Freischütz became his permanent residence. In 1924 Franz Fromm bought the Leckplatthof in Avelengo.

Luisa (bel), the daughter of Franz Fromm, married the later General Enea Navarini (1885–1977) in 1925. The villa remained in the family until the death of her daughter, Rosamaria Navarini (1926–2013). In her will, she established the Navarini-Ugarte Foundation to make the house with the family's collection accessible to the public.

museum

On the first floor, the bel étage , Franz Fromm's study and two salons of the villa are shown. The almost unchanged apartment of Rosamaria Navarini is on the second floor.

Franz Fromm collected more than 1000 objects, including cabinets from the 16th and 17th centuries, many of which are on display in the villa. He had a large arts and crafts collection and also bought contemporary works of art, including works by Ellen Tornquist, Eduard Euler and Georg Greve-Lindau , who was married to Zoila Fromm.

Some of these these collectibles are part of the museum and also part of the family history, the family lived within the objects, they were omnipresent.
