The Villa Lilly is a building complex near Lindschied , City of Bad Schwalbach , Hesse. The German-US-American beer manufacturer Adolphus Busch had the villa built as a summer residence from 1891 to 1915 based on designs by architects Friedrich Groh and Joseph Drescher . After various temporary uses, the almost 40 hectare park-like area, built with several historical buildings, has been used since 1987 for the treatment of addicts .

Historic Buildings

The entire property was planned and built by the "beer king" Adolphus Busch , who built a summer residence with it near his birthplace in Kastel . Adolphus Busch, who had attended grammar school and studied in Brussels , had emigrated to St. Louis with three of his brothers in 1857 at the age of 18, worked there in a wholesaler, later founded his own, and after marrying the brewery daughter Lilly Anheuser (1844–1928) created the largest brewery in the world: Anheuser and Busch (today part of Anheuser-Busch InBev ). From his summer residence he traveled to Germany in the saloon car that he had brought in specially from the USA, where he was not only attracted by cultural events such as the Bayreuth Festival , but grain prices were also negotiated locally (especially in Bohemia).

The main house of Villa Lilly was built first in 1891 and named after the wife of the builder Adolphus Busch: House Lilly. The building, unique in Hessen , is architecturally characterized by a mixture of European classicism and American colonial style . Only later was the second largest house, Haus Claire, completed, which with its Art Nouveau elements has more of a European feel. In addition to the generously laid out representative residential buildings, some of which are reminiscent of hunting lodges, extensive farm buildings including a historic greenhouse have been preserved. They stand in a loose ensemble on the 39 hectare park-like property, with the farm buildings grouped around the courtyard, which is reminiscent of a village square. The Villa Lilly was managed and inhabited by extensive staff all year round. This is reminiscent of some smaller historical buildings that are a little more hidden and less representative on the site.

Later uses

Under the National Socialists the building was used as a maternal convalescent place. US soldiers were later housed here, it was used as a school and as a social institution (Albert Schweitzer School, "Haus Schwalbach", etc.). In 1961 the complex was acquired by the state of Hesse and later extensively renovated for 15 million DM. The entire property has meanwhile been inhabited by members of the “ New Frankfurt School ” (founded by Hans Traxler and Robert Gernhardt , among others ). The first issue of the satirical magazine " Titanic " was planned and designed by them in the Claire house . The buildings are now all listed . In the meantime, ownership has passed to the current user and previous tenant (see below).

Todays use

The Villa Lilly has been used since 1987 under the name "Therapy Village Villa Lilly" for the therapeutic treatment of drug addicts . With 85 treatment places and 10 places for children of drug-dependent parents, the facility is one of the largest in Germany. It accepts patients across Germany. There is a separate care program for the preschool children of those treated here. The therapy practiced includes the treatment of psychological and physical sequelae such as hepatitis (especially hepatitis C), depression , psychosis , borderline and others, for which specialized therapy units are available. Psychotherapy and addiction therapy takes place in individual and group therapies, which are accompanied by indicative therapy offers and information events as well as relapse prevention programs. In the carpentry, electrical workshop (both are training companies), painting, metalworking, landscaping and building maintenance as well as the affiliated agriculture, the patients themselves contribute to maintaining the buildings and the almost 40 hectare parkland. In order to learn self-responsibility for themselves and their fellow human beings, the patients are nevertheless employed in the kitchen and housekeeping areas, where they are guided by specialist staff.
