Villa Remeis around 1860

His father, a municipal building supervisor, died in 1838. After attending school in Bamberg, Remeis studied law in Würzburg and Heidelberg from 1855 to 1859 at the request of his mother, who came from a wealthy red tanner family, and received his doctorate in this subject in Erlangen in 1863 .

From 1868 he was assessor at the city court and from 1870 at the district court in Bamberg. After his mother died in 1873, he applied to be dismissed from the civil service in order to devote himself to his true calling, astronomy.

Remeis was subsequently active in Bamberg's natural research society, he undertook extensive trips, especially to Italy, and began to set up a private observatory.

Karl Remeis died on May 28, 1882 after a long illness and without descendants. He left his entire fortune to the city of Bamberg on the condition that an observatory be built, otherwise his entire legacy should go to the city of Würzburg. As a reason he gave:

“Astronomy is the science that helps people to the correct knowledge of themselves and their position in the universe, but at the same time enables them to find the eternal laws of space, to reflect on the idea of creation and thus to cast a divine spark feel!"
