The Villa Rosebery in Naples is one of the three residences of the Italian President , alongside the Quirinal Palace in Rome and the Castel Porziano estate .

The Villa Rosebery is located in the Posillipo district , directly on the Gulf of Naples . It is surrounded by a six hectare large park . A small port belongs to the property .

history

The first owner of the villa was the Austrian Joseph von Thurn, naval brigadier of the Bourbon fleet, who had acquired the site from 1801. At the highest point of the site he had a small villa with a private chapel and a garden built and named it "Belvedere". The extensive rest of the property was used for agriculture or leased to farmers who cultivated vineyards and orchards there. Between 1806 and 1816, when the Kingdom of Naples fell to Napoleon , the property was confiscated by the French. In 1817, after the fall of Napoleon and the return of the Bourbons to power, Thurn got his property back, but decided to sell the villa and property. The owners changed several times from now on until the British statesman Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery acquired it in 1897. The villa was given its current name after him.

In 1909 Rosebery donated the property to the British government. The villa was now used as the residence of the British ambassadors in Italy and as a representative guest house. In 1932 the British government donated the villa to the Italian state. From then on, it served the royal family as a summer residence. Maria Pia, the first child of the Italian King Umberto of Savoy, was born in Villa Rosebery . The house was then renamed "Villa Maria Pia".

At the end of the war, the Allies initially took over the villa, which was given its previous name Villa Rosebery. It belonged to the Accademia Aeronautica until 1949 , then stood empty for a while until it was used again by the Italian state as one of the residences of the president.
