Villa rustica (Peiting)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa rustica in Peiting is a Roman estate ( Villa rustica ) from the Roman Empire . It dates from the 2nd to 4th centuries AD. The area then belonged to the Roman province of Raetia . Due to its size, it is one of the largest of its kind in the former Raetia. The 2.5 hectare area includes, among other things, the exposed main building with a rather unusual architecture compared to other Roman buildings north of the Alps.

History and description

The Romans conquered the Lech area from the Celtic Likatiers around 15 BC under the general Drusus . The remains of the ancient complex were discovered in 1956 on the Neukirchwiesen in the Peiting district of Kreut. The site is located south of the built-up area in the direction of Füssen , but still a little north of today's B 17 and B 472 bypass roads. The access is directly via Kreuther Weg, the western branch of federal road 17 on the outskirts before the bypass road. A junction of the ancient road connecting Via Raetia and Via Claudia Augusta is believed to be nearby .

Excavations took place in 1956, 1962 and from 1984 to 1989. The main building, which had already been excavated, had an atrium , i.e. an inner courtyard, which was unusual in this area. Instead of the usual corner projections , the main building has two apses . The bathing complex of the building complex had a hypocaust , Roman underfloor heating that was exposed between 2000 and 2004. The hypocaust can be viewed at any time of the year and has been in a glazed protective structure since 2012. There were also Samian ware found remains of wall paintings and fragments of former glass windows.

Today there is also a kitchen and medicinal herb training garden with information boards. Since around 1992 there has been a support association for the Villa rustica in Peiting, which was awarded a silver medal of honor from the Upper Bavaria district for special voluntary services in the preservation of monuments.
