Vinícius , full name Vinícius Bergantin (born July 31, 1980 in Salto ), is a former Brazilian football player and today's coach .

Player career

In Brasil

The defender originally comes from a village near São Paulo in Brazil, where he played for São Caetano , Esportiva do Gama and Ituano FC before moving to the Bundesliga for Hannover 96 in January 2003 .

Hannover 96

During the winter break of 2002/03, the Brazilian signed with the German Bundesliga club Hannover 96 . Vinícius took on the Italian citizenship due to Italian ancestors in order not to debit the foreigner account of non-EU foreigners at Hannover 96. On January 25, 2003 he made his Bundesliga debut against Hamburger SV . In the 2-2 draw, Vinícius was already in the starting line-up. Under coach Ralf Rangnick , Vinícius became a regular player in central defense and the defensive player never missed a game until the end of the season. Rangnicks successor Ewald Lienen , who was set on March 9, 2004, replaced Vinícius by Per Mertesacker after he completed the first 22 match days without a break. In the following years, however, Lienen Vinícius was used in various positions in defensive midfield. Lienen's successor, Peter Neururer , also retained this line . After Mertesacker's move to Werder Bremen in the summer of 2006 and Neururer's replacement by Dieter Hecking , Vinícius returned to central defense as a regular. As this he extended his contract in March 2007 until summer 2010. After the defensive player had back problems for the first time in 2008, he was often only a spectator at the games in Hanover. After he came to eleven missions in 2008/09, Vinícius was no longer used in 2009/10. The Brazilian played his last Bundesliga game on May 23, 2009, the 34th matchday, in a 2-2 draw against Arminia Bielefeld .

Vinni , as his teammates call him, has played 144 Bundesliga games and scored 9 goals (as of February 3, 2011) . His goal against FC Bayern Munich on April 5, 2003 is particularly noteworthy : Shortly before half-time, Vinícius converted a free kick from 32 meters flat and immediately after Oliver Kahn had decided not to put up a wall in view of the great distance. On January 31, 2007, he scored his first and only double in the Bundesliga in a 5-0 home win by Hanover against Hertha BSC .

Since his back pain in 2008, the defensive player has increasingly had back and intervertebral disc problems, which have regularly made him sideline. In the summer of 2010, the club officially adopted him.

Back in Brazil

After keeping fit for half a year at Hannover 96, Vinícius moved to the Brazilian second division club Americana Futebol on January 1, 2011 . After a total of ten games, Vinícius ended his professional career in November 2011.

Coaching career

He is currently the U-20 coach of his youth club Ituano FC .

Style of play

His basically strong commitment, good positional play, hard shot and good offensive header were sometimes offset by "hip stiffness", a lack of calm and a certain weakness in a duel on the ground.
