Vincenzo Maria Borghini (born October 29, 1515 in Florence , † August 15, 1580 ibid) was an Italian humanist , writer , academic and cleric .

Life

Joined the Benedictine Order in 1531 , Borghini became one of the most dominant people in the cultural milieu in Florence from the 1550s onwards, after having worked in various Italian towns (including Arezzo ), due to his education and diverse interests. One of the closest friends of Borghini, ordained a priest in 1541 , was the artist Giorgio Vasari , for whom he designed numerous subjects. These include furnishings in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and the large-scale painting of the dome of the Florence Cathedral , the frescoes of which were completed by Federico Zuccari after Vasari's death .

Borghini was also involved in the decorative design of the wedding of Francesco I de 'Medici and Johanna of Austria on December 18, 1565. Due to his important activities for political propaganda, Borghini was financially and ideally supported by various offices and benefices that were bestowed on him by Duke Cosimo I de 'Medici . One of the most significant was the appointment as spedalingo (head) of the Ospedale degli Innocenti in 1552, which he held until his death. In 1563 he also became the first Luogotenente (head) of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno , which was newly founded that year .

Among his philological pursuits, the intensive and long-term study of Giovanni Boccaccio's work is particularly worth mentioning. In addition to his numerous printed Discorsi and his extensive correspondence with important personalities of the Cinquecento , the Selva de 'notizie , which was unpublished during his lifetime, is one of the most important sources on Borghini's literary and artistic views. The Selva manuscript is now kept in the library of the Art History Institute in Florence .
