Vincent "Vinnie" Johnson (born September 1, 1956 in Brooklyn , New York ) is a retired American basketball player who was active from 1979 to 1992 in the NBA .

Vinnie was selected in the 1979 NBA draft in 7th place by the Seattle SuperSonics , for which he also initially played. During the 1981/82 season he moved to the Detroit Pistons , for which he was active until 1991. He then played one more season with the San Antonio Spurs .

In Detroit, Johnson was an important bench player who, when substituted on, often ran hot and contributed many points. This also moved the guard of the Boston Celtics Danny Ainge to give him the nickname "The Microwave".

With Detroit he became NBA champion in 1989 and 1990. In the fifth game of the 1990 NBA Finals against the Portland Trail Blazers , he hit 0.7 seconds before the end of the game the decisive throw that secured the Detroit Pistons the second championship in a row.

Johnson's number 15 was withdrawn from the Pistons after his retirement and has not been given to other players since then.
