history

The company was founded in 1910 as W. Vinten Cinematograph Engineers by William Vinten in London . In the previous year, Vinten had started to manufacture projectors for Kinemacolor films developed by the American film producer Charles Urban , among others .

After the First World War, the company, operating as William Vinten Ltd since 1924 , became the leading manufacturer of cinema projectors in Great Britain . After the first cameras for military reconnaissance were supplied during the First World War , the company also established itself on the film camera market after the war . During the Second World War , the worldwide demand for aerial reconnaissance cameras grew, from which Vinten benefited with the experience from the previous war. Even radar systems were made.

With the triumph of television and the major camera system customer BBC , the company continued to grow after the war. In addition to film and television cameras, the broadcaster also commissioned accessories such as brackets, tripods and cranes. An area that over the years completely displaced the production of optical devices.

After the IPO in 1972, the Vinten Group was founded in 1973 , whose subsidiary W Vinten Ltd continued the technical development for the Vinten brand . In 1989 the group took over the Italian tripod manufacturer Manfrotto .

In 1995 the company was renamed The Vitec Group . In the same year the German company Sachtler was taken over. Numerous other companies in the film and camera accessories sector followed. Including 2017, the American camera bag manufacturer Lowepro and the manufacturer of the Gorillapod -Stativs, Joby .
