Depiction of Violantes from the 13th century

Violante von Aragón , also Jolanthe (* 1236 in Saragossa , † 1301 in Roncesvalles ) was the royal wife of Alfonso X. , King of Castile and León from 1252 to 1282 and from 1257 to 1273 (1275) King ( counter-king ) of the Holy Roman Rich .

She was born as the daughter of the Aragonese King Jacob I (1208–1276) and his second wife Yolanda of Hungary (1215 / 19–1251), the daughter of the Hungarian King Andrew II and Jolante von Courtenay .

On December 26, 1246, she was married to the later King Alfonso X of Castile and León (1221-1284) in Valladolid at the age of only 10 . Because of her young age, the marriage remained childless for years and it was feared that the queen would be sterile. However, there is no historical evidence that Alfonso X supposedly wanted to have the marriage annulled. Violante bore a total of twelve children to her husband.
